Earlier this year I purchased a trade show display item from a well-known supply company. I had only placed one order with them this year, however, it was a high dollar item. I hadn’t needed anything else from them this year, but I did have them in my memory bank of go to vendors when I needed to search for a specialty product.
Fast forward to today, I got a letter in the mail from the same vendor. It was nice, short, but sweet, with a gift. I hadn’t ordered from them in a while so they were saying goodbye to me and giving me the gift as a friendly send off. In my 20 year career I have to say this was a first for me, but it did catch my attention. After all I am in marketing, what is marketing? Being memorable, and that it was.
While I appreciate the company may need to clean their marketing database up, maybe trying to re-engage me? They did get my attention, I remember them. Will I use them again, probably not. I’ll go elsewhere from now on. Oh and the gift….a fifty cent koozie, that went in the trash.
You always want to ensure you are putting your best foot forward, whether it’s a new customer or to re-engage an old customer, give them an incentive to contact you or to place an order. Be creative, be memorable, the right way.
